In this episode, Hal interviews UJ Ramdas on the importance of journaling and how just five minutes of journaling a day can significantly increase your productivity and help you achieve your goals. After being discovered by Tim Ferriss at a Mastermind a Talk event in Toronto, UJ has been able to share his passion for journaling through his book The Five Minute Journal.
According to UJ, journaling is like a toothbrush for the mind (13:54). It trains your mind to direct your energy in a positive way that allows you to live your life in a way that you get more meaning and value from it. By implementing this into your morning and nightly routine, you can upgrade your psychology and learn to focus your days around achieving your prioritized goals.
To gain perspective on where you want your day to go, begin each day answering these three questions:
- What are you grateful for today?
- What would make today great?
- Who do you want to be today?
At the end of the day, respond to these two prompts and allow yourself to focus on what matters most to you.
- Name three amazing things that happened today.
- How could you have made today better?
Be sure to focus your journal entries on things you have control over and claim responsibility for what you put out into the world. Once journaling becomes a habit, you will notice that you will come to appreciate the meaning and value in even the small things. With consistent journaling, you’ll see an improvement in yourself within a few months.
