[INTRODUCTION]

Hal Elrod: Hello, friends. Welcome to the Achieve Your Goals podcast. This week we are talking about how to regain control of your life, whatever that looks like for you, meaning whatever areas of your life you might feel like you’ve lost a sense of control in. Maybe it’s your finances, maybe it’s your relationship, maybe it’s your mental health. In fact, let me ask you, do you feel totally in control of your life right now or are there certain aspects? It could be the government. It could be the upcoming election. It could be personal situations or professional situations in your life that you might feel out of control. Do you ever feel overwhelmed or reactive amidst the constant change and uncertainty that seems to happen as we get older? Do you struggle to maintain focus, productivity, emotional balance even with a solid Miracle Morning routine?

Do you find it hard to break free from automatic, unhelpful responses to stress or do you ever feel disconnected from your deeper self and purpose like there’s got to be something more? There’s some sort of calling but you’re too busy to fulfill it. If you answered yes to any of these questions, today’s episode is absolutely for you. In fact, in the Miracle Morning app, during the onboarding process, people are asked which areas of their life they need help with and that’s what prompted today’s podcast. One of the top answers, in fact, I think it might be the top answer is the, “I want to feel in control of my life.” And so, I thought that’s what people are telling me they need help with, one of the many things, and so that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

But before we do, before we dive in, I want to tell you about and thank two of my favorite nutritional health brands, CURED Nutrition and Organifi, which also happen to be sponsors of this podcast. I personally use their products every single day and wouldn’t recommend anything that I didn’t strongly believe in. First is CURED Nutrition. I bookend my days with two of CURED Nutrition’s most popular products, Rise and Night Caps. Now, in the morning, to help me optimize my mental clarity and focus, I take Rise immediately after I wake up. It’s an expertly formulated, brain-boosting, nootropic blend that combines the power of lion’s mane and cordyceps mushrooms, rhodiola, ginseng, and broad-spectrum CBD.

And then at night, I take their Night Caps about 90 minutes before bed, an all-natural way to support deep, restorative sleep. We all know the impact of sleep on our health, but it’s not just about the hours spent in bed. It is about the quality of those hours. And that’s where Night Caps come into play. These capsules are formulated with 30 milligrams of CBD and 5 milligrams of CBN oil to create a calming effect from the CBD and a sedative effect from the CBN and work together to regulate your sleep without disrupting your body’s natural clock. If you want to improve your mental clarity in the morning, focus in the evening, or your sleep in the evening, head over to CUREDNutrition.com/Hal. That is C-U-R-E-D, CUREDNutrition.com/Hal and use the discount code ‘HAL’ for 20% off your order as a listener of the podcast.

Last but not least, Organifi. If you want to improve your health, lose weight, have more energy, enhance your ability to focus or achieve any of your health-related goals, I highly recommend Organifi. Personally, I start my day with Organifi and I use their Focus nootropic in addition to the CURED Nutrition Rise supplement to help me to think more clearly and concentrate. Then I take the Red Juice for my workout to help boost VO2 output and nitric oxide levels, increase blood flow, and improve cardiorespiratory endurance efficiency. And then I use Vanilla Protein Powder after my workout to build muscle mass and repair the micro-tears that naturally occur in muscle fibers when you lift weights. If you want to improve your health every morning, head over to Organifi.com/Hal that is spelled O-R-G-A-N-I-F-I.com/Hal, and use the code ‘HAL’ for 20% off your order as a listener of this podcast.

All right. Goal achievers, I love you. I want you to feel in control of your life. I know sometimes I feel out of control because there are so many aspects of our lives that we don’t have control over but today we’re going to talk about not just focusing on things that you have control over but how to really tap into your mindset and your behaviors that will enhance your ability to both feel in control of your life and actually be in control of your life. Here we go.

[EPISODE]

Hal Elrod: Yes. Today, we are talking about how to regain control of your life, whatever that looks like for you. And I see whatever that looks like for you because for some people, you might be feeling out of control when it comes to your finances. Your financial situation may feel out of control, and for others, it might be your marriage. You might feel out of control in your marriage or in some other relationship in your life. For others, it might be your mental health. The realm of mental health may feel out of control. And I know for me, the last three and a half years have been an up-and-down roller coaster of feeling more out of control than not when it comes to my mental health.

And there have been some major challenges from lead poisoning to chemotherapy toxicity that have really messed up my brain in measurable ways where I get my brain tested and they go, “Oh, man, I’m surprised that you’re able to even function,” which is never encouraging and then trying to figure out how to resolve that. So, we all have different areas of life that we may feel out of control. So, how do you regain control of your life? Well, this morning I was reading a book, one of my favorite books, one of my favorite authors, I should say, Ben Hardy, 10x Is Easier Than 2x. And by the way, that book is for entrepreneurs very specifically. If you’re not an entrepreneur, I wouldn’t even check it out. But if you are an entrepreneur, I would…

By the way, if you are not an entrepreneur, I would check out Ben Hardy’s book, The Gap and The Gain. That is one of my favorite books of all time, The Gap and The Gain. But this morning I was reading 10x Is Easier Than 2x, and I came across the following passage that really resonated with me. It resonated with me and it actually was partially responsible for inspiring today’s topic. So, here’s the passage. “If you are like most people, you may be stuck in a finite game, a situation, perspective, objective, identity, etcetera. You’re not expanding your freedom to be, do, and have. You’re caught up in fear and paralysis.” That line, by the way, caught me. I’m like, “Gosh, I’ve been in a lot of fear and paralysis over the last few years.”

“You’re maintaining the status quo of who you’ve been and what you are doing now. The alternative is playing the infinite game of expanding your freedom. However, freedom isn’t cheap. It requires brutal honesty with yourself and others, which is terrifying yet liberating.” So, that resonated with me because I feel like I’ve been playing a finite game in terms of I’m just going through the motions like Ben talked about, right, just the maintaining the status quo and not expanding, not growing. I was talking to a new friend that I recently met at an event, and we were having a conversation yesterday, and he is playing an infinite game. And he like reminded me, he asked me, “How much of your time is spent just like answering emails and recording podcasts and just like doing the same things every day?”

And I said, “Oh, man, I’m in that rut right now. I’m in the rut of just doing the same things to maintain the status quo and serve my audience and serve my family.” And in some ways, you could argue like, “Well, there’s nothing wrong with that. If we’re waking up every day and we’re doing things to add value to other people and we’re exercising and meditating and journaling, and I feel like I’ve got a pretty good ritual in place. My daily habits are good but where I’m lacking and where you might be lacking is I’m not playing this infinite game of expansion where I have time set aside. And this is what he really highlighted for me was he said, “How much time do you spend really reflecting on your life, on your current behaviors, on your current results, and really thinking exponentially of what is possible, what you really want if there were no limits?”

He said, “How much time do you spend dreaming of what you could create or contribute?” And the answer was none. I mean, I’m busy, and I think that for a lot of us, right, that might be where the lack of control in our lives stems from is we are busy. We’re too busy to take the time to gain the clarity and the intention, generate the intention to take control, regain control of our lives. And I know that I am absolutely guilty of that. So, the first step I’m going to encourage you all to consider in regaining control of your life is defining what that means for you. What does that mean? And I think for me, the word ‘control’ doesn’t resonate as much as the word ‘freedom.’ I think it’s gaining. You know, when I feel free, I have control because I have the freedom to do what I want, when I want, with whomever I want.

So, I like the word ‘freedom’ better. The reason I use the word ‘control’ is because the Miracle Morning app when we on-board people, that was one of the top answers that people put in the app when they were asked what areas of their life were they struggling with. It was like, “Not just areas. I feel my life is out of control. I want to feel in control of my life.” That was the, I think that’s maybe the number one answer in the app right now. So, that’s where the word ‘control’ comes from. But again, for me it’s freedom. So, define what being in control of your life means to you. Is it like me? It’s freedom. It’s when I have freedom, I feel in control because I get to do what I want, when I want, with whoever I want. Is it happiness? I know that for me if I feel happy, if I feel good, that’s a sense of control. You have control over your mental and emotional state.

And here’s the thing. When you have control over that, you can do whatever you want. Michael Singer in one of his books, I don’t remember which one, it’s either The Untethered Soul or his newer book, Living Untethered, but he talks about all we really want is to feel good, we want to feel up and excited and passionate and loving and joyful. That’s what we want. We just want to feel that. And everything we’re doing in life is trying to generate those feelings, right? I just want to feel that, feel good. And he said, “If you can figure that out, how to feel good all the time,” he said, “It doesn’t really matter what you’re doing because you’ve achieved what you’re really trying, what you’re striving for,” which is that inner state, that inner freedom that we’ve talked about so much in the last few years on this podcast.

So, being in control of your life, is it happiness? Is it freedom? Is it financial security? I know that for me, when I am not in a good place financially, I feel very out of control. I feel very out of control. That actually is an area of improvement for me to not have my mental and emotional well-being so tied up into my financial security. So, that’s been something that I’ve continued to work on in my life. So, is being in control of your life meaning you’re financially secure? Does it mean you have time for yourself? Right now, do you feel out of control because you’re constantly responding to the demands of other people? And if that is the case, I encourage you to read the book, Boundaries, which is one of probably five books that I’m reading right now.

Boundaries. I can’t remember the subtitle but it was written a long time ago. I think Henry MacLeod. Don’t quote me on that. I’m going off my faulty memory here, but that’s a phenomenal book. Probably the best book ever written. I mean, it’s sold millions of copies on how to create boundaries in your life so you can have time for yourself. And maybe it’s all of the above. Maybe you’re like, “Hal, I’m struggling in my marriage or relationships. I’m struggling as a parent. I’m struggling with my mental health. I’m struggling in my finances. I’m feeling out of control in not just one area but in a lot of different areas of life.” And if that is true, keep listening because we’re going to continue talking about how to resolve, how to regain that control.

I was watching a video the day before yesterday, I think, from Mel Robbins and if you don’t know who Mel Robbins is, she’s the author of The 5 Second Rule. And I can’t think of her new book off the top of my head, but Mel Robbins. Just go to her YouTube channel. She’s absolutely phenomenal. She was in the Miracle Morning Movie, by the way. And the video I was watching was titled “Struggling to have a happier life? THIS is the key.” And she shared a story about her daughter who was really going through a difficult time in her life during COVID. She had graduated college and didn’t get to walk for graduation, which she had been looking forward to for four years. And she’d been planning on going on a trip and that got canceled.

Her life, as she knew it, everything she had been planning on, it all kind of fell apart. And I’d imagine she felt out of control because the things she had planned, right, that she lost control and it was taken away from her. It wasn’t her fault. And so, she went to her mom, Mel, and Mel was giving her some advice. And Mel essentially said, she shared with her that to create two lists since her daughter was unhappy, she felt out of control in her life, she encouraged her to make two lists. One, she basically said, “Take a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle.” Right? We’ve all done that before. You’ve heard me do that before. And there’s a lot of different exercises that begin this way, right? A lot of different exercises, self-help, personal growth exercises that begin by grabbing a piece of paper and drawing a line down the middle.

In fact, one of the ways I do that is on the one side, write everything that’s wrong in your life. On the other side, write everything that’s great in your life, everything to be grateful for. And then you realize that every person on earth has both of those lists. And how you feel about life is dependent on which lists you focus on and you spend most of your time. You, me, celebrities, people that are wealthy and successful and have everything that they could ever want if they live on the negative page, the negative side of the list, and focus on everything in their life, their faults, and their failures and things that aren’t going their way in the areas they don’t feel in control of, right, you feel down, you feel depressed, you feel like life is terrible, even though there’s so much on the other side of that line that we have to be grateful for.

So, this is one. No, that’s not the exercise I’m going to share with you from Mel but that’s one thing that I’ve done in my life many times. It’s also very in alignment with the book that I just mentioned a few minutes ago, The Gap and The Gain, which essentially would be the gap is the gap between your current life and your expectations or your desires, things that you wish were different. And when you live in the gap, you feel depressed and out of control and fearful. And then the other side is the gain, which is the list of everything that you have in your life, everything you’ve accomplished, everything you’ve overcome, everything you have to be grateful for. That’s everything that’s in the gain.

So, when you live your life in the gap, you don’t feel good and you don’t feel empowered to make improvements in your life. You feel discouraged and disempowered. When you live in the gain on that other side of the page, you feel empowered, you feel grateful, you feel happy. So, with all of that said, the exercise that Mel Robbins encouraged her daughter to do that she shared in this video was on one side of the page where you drew the line down the middle, and I’m encouraging all of you to do this exercise. Why wouldn’t you? I did the exercise. It was great. She said, “On one side, write happy me. And on the other side, write…” and I think I’m paraphrasing this, I don’t remember the exact word she used, but I think it was, “Current to me,” something along those lines.

So, ‘happy me’ on the left of the page and ‘current me’ on the right, and happy me is she encouraged her daughter to look at a time in her life when she was the happiest and write down everything that she was doing in her life at that time. So, essentially, she walked her through like, “What was your daily schedule? What time did you wake up? What did you do first? What did you eat for breakfast? What did you do next? What were you excited about in life? What did you look forward to each day?” So, she had her write down on the happy me. It was just simply looking back in her own life, right? She’s not reading a book on tips to be happy, and this is true for all of us, by the way. We all have the wisdom within us to solve our own problems. We have the wisdom within us, and this is one aspect of that wisdom is to look at a time in your life when you were thriving in whatever area of your life you’re not thriving in right now.

So, another way you could put this is a time in your life when you felt in control or you felt free, or you felt financially secure or you felt happy. Whatever it is for you on that left side, it’s looking at a time in your life when things were as you would want them to be, and you felt good about your life or in the context of today’s episode, you felt in control of your life. And so, when she had her daughter do this, her daughter looked back and went, “Well, I was waking up at 7 a.m.,”

and I think it was when she was in college when she was really happy. “I was waking up at 7 a.m. I was exercising first thing in the morning. I was eating a healthy breakfast. I was going to school. I was excited about my classes. I got to see my friends every day and spend all my every day, five days a week with my friends.”

And she went on and on and on about all these things she was doing. She said she went to bed at a good time and she wasn’t drinking alcohol. And then on the right side of the page, when she wrote down her current life or her current me or current self, it was, “Man, I’m sleeping until noon every day. I’m not eating healthy, I’m drinking alcohol.” And again, I wouldn’t share this if this was private information. This is a public video on YouTube that Mel shared this story. In fact, I actually was really inspired by how open and vulnerable Mel was about her own life, which I try to be but sometimes my wife will overhear me talking. She’s like, “Why are you sharing that? That’s private information.” I’m like, “Oh my bad. I’m just kind of an open book.”

But anyway, and so what her daughter and what you can immediately gain from this exercise is clarity. You go, “Oh, I look at a time in my life when I felt in control, when I felt purposeful, when I felt fulfilled, when I had freedom, when I had time to myself,” and look at how you were spending your days. When you felt in control of your life, how were you spending your days? And I would also add, as you’re making that list of, again, Mel had ‘happy me’ on one side. I’m going to tell you to put, you know, ‘When I felt in control of my life’ on the one side and then ‘My current out-of-control life’ on the other side. And if it’s just one aspect of your life, by the way, you can put, maybe it’s marriage, ‘When I felt in control in my marriage’ and ‘My current out-of-control marriage,’ right?

So, you can get specific or you can generalize your life as a whole. And what this does is, again, you’re tapping into the wisdom that you already possess, that the answers to everything that you want to improve, change, overcome in your life are within that you can look back and go, “Okay. When I felt in control of my life, I had my days scheduled. Maybe I was exercising in the morning, so I felt good. I was meditating, I was reading, I was journaling, I was doing the Miracle Morning, whatever it is.” I know for me, if I don’t do my Miracle Morning, I feel out of control because instead of being proactive by taking that time for myself first thing in the morning, I end up being, you know, if I skip the Miracle Morning, which rarely ever happens for me and because I’ve learned through not doing it that I feel out of control.

I go, “Oh my gosh, now I’m reactive. Now, I miss a Miracle Morning. I get to wake up and I get to react to my kids in the morning and then react to my spouse and then I get to react to emails and I get to react…” I’m reactive all day long versus starting the day with a peaceful, purposeful Miracle Morning ritual. And then when I do that, I go into the day feeling in control. And I will say this. This really is about feeling in control. This is about how you feel, right? You’re not out of control. It’s not like you’re driving a car down the highway and you’re swerving out of control and dodging other cars like that would be literally being out of control. No. You’re just sitting in your house or driving to work or at the office or working from home. And so, that’s what you’re actually doing. You’re not physically out of control. You feel out of control.

And that’s really important to understand. An important distinction is that you gaining control of your life is about gaining the feeling of being in control, and affirmations are probably the most effective way to do that. In fact, I’m going to share with you, I wasn’t planning on doing this, but they’re sitting here on my desk. I’m running a five-month program for a company. I won’t say which company. And they shared the challenges that their people are having and their people are feeling out of control. They feel out of control based on inflation because inflation is up and they’re finding it harder to get customers. They’re the leaders of this company. Not like the executives but they’re the people that the sales team, if you will, the managers, those leadership levels, they’re afraid. And their people are afraid, right?

They’re afraid of the economy. They’re afraid their business is down. It’s harder to get customers. And that was the third thing they shared is that it used to be easier to build their business. And so, people are wondering, should I do something else? They feel totally out of control. And so, I created these level 10 leadership affirmations for this group because I know that they came to a 60-minute session that I led online with I had a slide show and all of that. But I know very well that they’re going to have some aha moments. They’re going to have some breakthroughs. They’re going to feel empowered, inspired. And then I’m not around that evening and the next day, and the next week and the next month. And so, more likely than not, they’re going to fall back into their old patterns and their emotional states of feeling out of control and feeling afraid.

So, I created these affirmations so that they would be able to reprogram their subconscious mind, direct their focus every single day, so having this as a reminder. So, I don’t want to read all of these to you. Again, I wasn’t planning on this at all. I just look down on my desk and I thought, “This feels fitting.” So, here we go. I start the affirmation out with a quote from Margaret J. Wheatley from her book, Who Do We Choose to Be?, which I have done podcast episodes on that book before. All right. And I need to have Margaret on the podcast. I still haven’t reached out to her. Anyway, here’s the quote from Margaret J. Wheatley. “I can’t imagine a more important task than consciously choosing who I want to be as a leader for this time. We must understand the time we’re in, focus our energy on what’s possible, and be willing to step forward to serve the human spirit.”

I’m going to read the first line of that again. “I can’t imagine a more important task than consciously choosing who I want to be as a leader for this time.” A leader is anyone who influences the thinking, actions, or development of another human being. I’m going to say that again. I believe that’s from Ken Blanchard. A leader is anyone who influences the thinking, actions, or I guess you could say, behavior, or development of another human being. If you are a parent, you are a leader. If you are a friend, you are a leader. If you are a spouse, you are a leader. If you talk to other human beings and you try to influence them in a positive way, I guess the negative way you just be a bad leader, but in a positive way, right, you are a leader.

And so, right now there’s a lot that’s out of our control. And you’ve heard me say this for the last three and a half years, this was one of my distinctions, my epiphanies in 2020, which is, “Oh, we’re all focused on things that are out of our control. And when we focus on that which is out of our control, we feel out of control. And feeling out of control in life perpetuates stress, fear, and leads to depression.” I’ll say that one more time. Allowing ourselves to feel out of control perpetuates stress, fear, and depression. And when we focus on that which is out of our control, we allow ourselves to feel out of control. So, there’s a lot we can’t control right now, but who are we going to be? Are we going to be fearful? Are we going to allow ourselves to live in a place of perpetual stress and anxiety?

Does that serve us? Does that serve the people that we love, the people that we lead? So, are we going to allow ourselves to be a subpar version of our limitless self or are we going to choose, consciously choose to step up, to focus our energy on what’s possible, and be willing to step forward to serve the human spirit as Margaret J. Wheatley so eloquently said? And let me read some of these affirmations for you. First, my commitment. “I am committed to stepping up and serving those I love and those I lead no matter what.” And I encourage you, by the way, when I say I, I want you to even repeat after me if you want. But this is you, right? I’m speaking to you from a place of affirming what is true or what can be true.

“So, I am committed to stepping up and serving those I love and those I lead no matter what. I choose to embrace our current collective reality and not waste time wishing it were different. I commit to continuously using my influence in service of others during these challenging and uncertain times no matter how difficult it gets. Yes, inflation is up. Yes, people are afraid, including me. And, yes, it used to be easier to build my business. However, those are three things I can’t change other than overcoming my own fears, which I can and absolutely will do. But those are the reasons, the exact reasons why my leadership is needed now more than ever. I am committed to using my God-given gifts and abilities to positively influence others during this critical time.”

I’m going to leave it at that with the affirmations. There’s two more paragraphs that they go on, but the point is this is when it comes to taking control of your life, one of the most effective ways to do that is to step up as a leader for other people, is to realize that it’s not just about you. How you live your life gives other people permission to do the same, unconsciously. You don’t have to say anything. The way that you live your life, and this is true for all of us, it gives other people permission to do the same. If you live in stress and anxiety and fear and depression, then you are going to impact other people and give them permission. Unconsciously, you’re going to influence them as a leader. You are a leader. You’re going to influence other people to also live in stress, fear, anxiety, and depression.

And, hey, if we all do that, the world as it’s kind of doing, right, it’s not going to be in a great place. And how many people collectively would you say ever since 2020, our collective consciousness as a society, as a global society, has shifted to experience unprecedented levels of fear, stress, and anxiety? And so, you and I have a responsibility to be the change, to step forward, to serve the human spirit, to be a leader, to choose who we want to be during this difficult time. Life is challenging. Things feel out of control. But we are in control of the two things that I constantly want to bring you back to. It’s who we become each day through our daily personal development, and then how we show up each day through our conscious choice.

I’ll say that again. To regain control of your life, you’ve got to focus on the two things that we have control over. Number one, who you become each day through your daily personal development, not to mention your daily reflection and your deep thought as I’ve been missing out on some of those practices, being too busy. And if you’re too busy, you’ve got to create space in your schedule each day 10 minutes, 30 minutes, whatever you can afford, whatever you can fit, whatever you make time for, that’s up to you. But we’ve got to make time to reflect and to think about what we want for our lives. What gaining freedom, regaining control, what does that look like and then developing ourselves into the person that’s capable of creating and sustaining the life that we want?

And the second piece is then showing up at our best for the people that we love and the people that we lead. But here’s the thing. If we don’t do the first part, if we don’t take control of our development each day, then we’re faking it the rest of the day, right? If you’re trying to get a positive source for other people, but you have not been a positive source for yourself, if you have not loved yourself and nurtured yourself and focused on what matters most to you, then you are of no use to other people, right? You’re a shell. You’re faking it. We’ve got to still put your oxygen mask on first. I’m going to read the rest of this affirmation because I just realized I took a lot of time to write this, and I think it’ll help you. So, first was my commitment. Second, my why.

“I’m committed to leading because I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to do so. Throughout human history, true leaders have risen when times are most difficult and they are most needed. Now is one of those times. People, my people are struggling and need love, guidance, and encouragement. It is my responsibility to use my gifts to love, support, and lead them now and into the future. This journey requires strength and perseverance. So, I’m committed to staying on the path no matter what happens or what I feel. I was put on this earth at exactly this time in human history to lead, and I will not cower from my God-given abilities.” By the way, I’ll send you this affirmation so you don’t have to write this down. I’ll send you this as a PDF with the podcast. So, if you’re not on the email list, I’m going to email this out to our Miracle Morning community in PDF form.

All right. Last part of the affirmation. Third, my how. “Leadership occurs any time I seek to influence the thinking, behavior, or development of another person and that begins with me. So, I will start each morning with my Miracle Morning SAVERS to positively influence and optimize my thinking, behavior, and development. In doing so, I will continue becoming the person I need to be to fulfill my limitless potential and lead by example to help others do the same. Once I’ve optimized my thinking, behavior, and development each morning, I will spend my days serving others to the best of my abilities, and I will do so from a place of love and contribution. I will be an island of sanity in a sea of chaos, reminding everyone to focus all of our energy on what we can control, which is who we choose to be and how we choose to show up for ourselves and others each and every day. Leadership begins with me. I am a level 10 leader.”

[CLOSING]

Hal Elrod: All right. Goal achievers, I’m going to close it there. I hope you got some nuggets today that you can apply to your life. And again, write it down. You’ve got to commit. You’ve got to take that action. You can’t just hear a podcast and think everything is going to get better. You’ve got to revisit and implement what it is that you’ve learned that resonated with you. All right. I have so much love for you, so much appreciation. Let’s keep helping each other. Let’s keep loving on people proactively, loving on everyone in your life, and that means even the bank teller, the waitress. Like, just be a source of love and light and that is who I believe we need to choose to be during this time in human history. I love you so much. And I will talk to you next week.
