When asked to list their top fears, most people list public speaking first and death second. As Jerry Seinfeld once said, this means that if you’re at a funeral, you’d rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy. Face your fear and cultivate your skills with Hal Elrod as he interviews Jon Berghoff on how public speaking can help you to influence, inspire, and communicate to large groups and in personal interactions.

One of the most important keys in speaking effectively to an audience, no matter how large or small, is understanding the importance of context over content. You might have a very well-written speech, but if you aren’t aware of where your audience is coming from, it will fall on deaf ears. Jon gives his Context Creation Formula to help you in creating an effective framework.

If you ask them, most audiences will know a good speaker from a bad one. But what are the qualities of a good speaker and how can you develop them yourself? Jon and Hal each share their top three tips to help you on your public speaking journey:

  1. Empathetic
  2. An ability to inspire
  3. Self-awareness and presence
  4. Vulnerability
  5. Storytelling
  6. Entertaining

Never underestimate the power of preparation and always remember that, even though the spotlight is on you, public speaking is ultimately about the audience and their experience. Join Jon Berghoff and Jon Vroman at their Speaker Trainer Experience event to learn more about delivering exceptional speeches and how to distinguish between speaking and training.
